For more than 3 decades the River Side Beach Camps flourished in Rishikesh. Located on the fine white sand beaches by the river side around Shivpuri, Marine Drive, Byasi and Kaudiyala, the beach camps offered cheap and wholesome packages which included camping, 3 meals, tea/coffee with evening snacks, bonfire and of course – river rafting.

Costing anything from Rs.800/- PP to Rs.2000/- PP these camps served the youth from all classes, the call center weekend crowds, the team building corporate, families and even love birds. People would fly over from Mumbai and include a camping rafting tour in Rishikesh, before going on to a tour of North India. It was cheap, it was fun and perfect holiday for all of North India and then it simply closed.

The beach camps were shut down in June 2015 and threw the major chunk of Rishikesh’s growing tourism industry out into space. So what really happened? Here are a few news snippets we have collected which give you a clear view of what happened to the beach camps in Rishikesh and why they were closed.

Well, the beach camps closed and started relocating at various places close to the river like – Phool Chatti, Gattu Ghat, Garud Chatti and the villages nearby. None of the camps is now allowed to operate on the beaches of river Ganga. A few are located close to the beach, but that is as close to the river beach as you can get.
